Joint media release with Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and Digital Economy Andrew Charlton MP and Assistant Minister for Immigration, Foreign Affairs and Trade Matt Thistlethwaite MP
The Albanese Labor Government is backing Australia’s world-leading quantum sector with $12.3 million in funding across 6 projects that will help strengthen energy systems, improve health outcomes, enhance biosecurity and optimise supply chains.
Among the successful projects, Sydney-based Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC) will receive $3.6 million to expand the development of its quantum-enhanced artificial intelligence processor with Schneider Electric, to make Australia’s energy networks more efficient, sustainable and secure.
The funding is provided through Round 2 Stage 2 of the Albanese Government’s Critical Technologies Challenge Program, which is accelerating the commercialisation and adoption of quantum technologies developed in Australia.
Working with the University of New South Wales, SQC will integrate its quantum hardware with Schneider Electric’s artificial intelligence models, to improve energy forecasting and support renewable energy utilisation.
The other successful projects are:
- $2.2 million to develop accurate testing and diagnosis of iron deficiency in First Nations peoples led by FeBI Technologies (VIC).
- $2.2 million to build and test an advanced quantum clock that can keep the electricity grid accurately timed without relying on external signals led by QuantX Labs (SA).
- $2 million to deliver a working prototype next generation quantum biosensor for more efficient border inspections led by Avicena Systems (WA).
- $1.2 million for development of a real-time quantum biosensor monitoring livestock health and disease led by iQ Sense (QLD).
- $1.1 million for development of a smart software platform to improve delivery and transport planning led by Q Factorial (QLD).
The projects each address one of four nationally significant challenge areas:
- Improve biosecurity outcomes by enhancing the detection of invasive pests or diseases, and cargo inspection processes
- Improve life expectancy, health outcomes and access to health technology for First Nations peoples
- Optimise transport routes, logistics and supply chain operations
- Optimise the performance, sustainability, and security of energy networks
The projects build on successful Stage 1 feasibility studies and will now move into the demonstrator phase, helping accelerate the commercialisation of Australian quantum technologies and position Australia as a leader in the global quantum economy.
